Pouilly-Fumé Villa Paulus 2020

Harvested on Kimmeridgian marls – mix of white clay and fossilized shells, this wine can be paired with fish when young and then with poultry or white meats after several years. Smoother and longer than “Les Angelots”, ‘Villa Paulus’ will be excellent with a pike served with white butter sauce, a risotto with porcini mushrooms, scallops cooked in Pouilly-Fumé sauce, or a turbot served with lemon and girolle mushrooms. Aged around 5 – 6 years, it perfectly matches poultry with morel mushrooms, or scrambled eggs with truffle.

Excellent little Pouilly Fume It really ticks all the boxes, but is not a spectacular wine. It is simply excellent. On the nose: hints of citrus fruits (lime, lemon, and even some grapefruit). Followed by hints of minerality, wet gravel, hay, grass and a slight hint of cream. On the palate: an immediate hit of minerals, honey, peach, citrus fruits and some hay. Un des meilleurs sauvignons blancs que j’ai dégusté jusqu’à maintenant (sous réserve d’une expérience limitée): un parfum d’agrumes mais également de fleurs introduisant en bouche une belle richesse sans excès d’acidité, beaucoup de fruits jaunes, une pointe de sucrosité agréable, une très belle longueur. Le vigneron suggère de le marier (entre autres) à la volaille aux morilles et l’accord était parfait.

Dry for a Sauv but changes wonderfully with food. More mineral with oysters; soft and fruity with Hawaiian poke; tart citrus with tomato glazed grilled fish.

This is a classy pouilly fume. Good weight of lemon and lime fruit on the palate with plenty of attack. Very long with hints of that classic smokey flinty finish. One of my favorites for summer drinking!

Tasted at big merchant tasting. Nice aromatics of gooseberries, chalky minerality and a touch of grass. It’s medium-bodied and very fresh, with medium-high acidity and a good finish.

A very elegant wine. Some gooseberry and lemon fruits. It is medium to fullbodied on the palate showing some smoky notes. Very good with salads and ceviche.

Greetings in green embark from the glass in a comfortable intensit, moving into tropical flavours on the palate, a toasty medium finish for a fair experience. This would be a preference to a NZ counterpart.

Classic cool climate Sauvignon Blanc nose of gooseberry, green apples, straw, with a honeysuckle sweetness. Very expressive aromas which jump out of the glass. Enjoyable palate: white grapefruit, bitter gooseberry, chalky, mineral. Medium plus finish on opening. Somewhat in the NZ style but more mineral and alcohol completely masked (12.5%). Eminently quaffable and incredible value! 90-91
